Two thumbs up for College, two thumbs way way down for orientation speeches!

At 9:30 this morning i got off the highway and entered a long line of traffic, most of which were trying to get into eastern. After about 10 minutes of bumper to bumper traffic i was able to steal a parking spot in the north parking garage and head over to the student center for the Commuter student Orientation. Well, guess what folks? There wasn't really a commuter student orientation because no one was really there. There was this lonely S.O.C. (i don't know what it stands for but those wearing the shirt that have those letters on them are the student helpers) sitting on the steps. When i asked her where exactly i needed to be she laughed, then sighed a frustrated sigh and said "You're the third person that has come up." She went on to explain that the commuters don't really have any set activities to attend and because most of the activities are for the residents, us commuters get to walk around campus all weekend and basically do nothing!!!!

That very disappointing news aside (I could have slept longer!) =( I was very excited when i saw all the parents dragging huge boxes, garbage bags, TVs, containers and everything else imaginable out of there vehicles and into the dorms. I found it a little funny to watch all the chaos because i wasn't part of it. Lucky for me i don't have to worry if 40 pairs of jeans will last me until my next trip home. Yeah! It was unbelievable what some people brought with them. One of my friends had this roommate that doesn't live very far away but brought so much clothes and other stuff that my friend was like "oh my gosh, did i bring enough stuff?" This friend of mine lives like 15 minutes away. It's crazy!
I guess in a way i do feel left out though. In a way i would like to be a part of the moving-in chaos! I mean the dorms are actually really cool and it's a great way to make friends. It's also fun to decorate the dorms and stuff. However, at the same time i'm glad i don't live on campus because i wouldn't be able to have a car and if i don't have a car i can't get to my job. There are jobs on campus but you're limited how many hours you can work. Besides it's nice to be able to go back home to my own bed and study in peace.

Ok, i feel better! Back to the welcome weekend! So, at about 11:15, after i walked around campus, helped a friend unpack and got my parking permit; i headed over to the student center for the Convocation. We all had to sit there until 12:00. For about an hour and a half board members took turns reading their speeches and saying the same things over and over again. For example; "Congradulations class of 2011" or "you are all adults now and we will treat you as such" and letting us know that eastern is a good school. Then afterwards we went outside into the blazing sun, unkind heat and absent breeze to do a traditional "make a wish" ceremony. This ceremony was us walking around part of the campus and tossing a penny into the wishing fountain, then passing under the famous clock tower and lining up for a class picture. I don't understand what the point was for the photographer to get into a cherry picker and try to take the picture of all of us, because it's not like you can see me! I'm in the second to last row and there are three tall, atheletes in front of me. Geesh! Waste of film if you ask me!

Then it was the welcome picnic. After wiggling my way through the crowd, grabbing part of a sandwhich and a very warm but much needed water bottle, i high-tailed myself right out of there. I snuck into the parking garage, got into my car and drove all the way home. I'm not sure if i was technically supposed to do that but i was tired, hot, dehydrated, bored and ready to leave. The rest of the night was for the residents anyways.
Unfortunatley, a very prissy S.O.C. told me that i should be there for the remainder of the weekend because there is lots of informarion that i will need about the campus. Well, according to the schedule i was given, the rest of the weekend is basically for the residents but i guess us commuters haven't done enough touring of the campus or walking around yet. So, guess what i will be doing for the next two days? Walking!!! Yeah!!! Will see about how much info i really need and i'll check that out at 10:30 tomorrow!!! I never thought i would say this but when are the classes going to start!!!

hehehe ewwww orientation stuff does suck I agree. Did they a least have "prizes" like scholl mascot fridge magnets, or that really goofy looking "dink cozie" (NOT that it is to be used for anything other than juice and soda cans according to them. LOL
even a cupon for free drink or snack at the cafe?? the only reason I went to orientation was to get the little goodies they had.
